Minnetonka High School Theatre Presents On the Town this November
October 27, 2017
It’s wartime in 1944, and three sailors are On the Town in New York for their 24-hour shore leave. Each seek their own adventure in the Big Apple before returning to war. All three find conflict, excitement, and romance in Leonard Bernstein’s classic musical.
This show is the perfect “hamburger”: an all America classic that is tasty and comforting. Leonard Bernstein’s quintessential Broadway score, a comical plot, and protagonists on an escapade make On the Town the perfect golden age musical that anyone is sure to enjoy.
Liam Boris, ‘20, an ensemble member, says, “It’s a really fun story to experience for just one day!”
Leonard Bernstein’s musical influence gives the show its classical and spirited mood. Amanda Tahnk-Johnson, ‘18, who plays character Clair De Lune, notes that the celebrated composer, who also wrote the score for West Side Story, writes music from the “big band era […] with jazz elements.”
Many would agree that the best part of On the Town is the phenomenal score.
Though the plot is not the main event in On the Town, its comical elements make it truly enjoyable for the audience.Of course, all three sailors manage to find their share of comedy and trouble.
As actor Ryan O’Neill, ‘18, says, “It’s a guy-chase-girl sort of musical, with comedy, wooing and a quick resolution!”
When cast and crew members were asked why someone should see On the Town, all unanimously answered that it is a fun show with superb production values.
To quote actor Luke Henson, ‘19, “The show is a ten out of ten; the production is great [and] it is casted to perfection! It is an engaging show, it is an exciting show, and it is a great show for anyone who loves theater.”
The entertaining, ludicrous performance is the embodiment of 40’s humor, which is sure to inspire laughter.
