The cold and sleet of the winter season may give some people the impression that it’s a terrible time to take pictures outside; however, there are still a great number of places in Minnesota to take some winter-themed, Insta-worthy photos over break. Here is just a short list of wintry events and locations:

St. Paul Winter Carnival: St. Paul, Jan 25-Feb 10, hours vary

The St. Paul Winter Carnival offers a multitude of signature events, including parades and shows. Rice Park, the centerstage for the carnival, is brightly lit and great for photos. Ice carvings and palaces also provide many opportunities to take wintery Instagramable snaps. Better yet, it’s free.

Minnesota Landscape Arboretum: Chaska, open daily

Although the Arboretum is known for a great spring and summer location to take nature photos and portraits, it is also a great setting for winter photos as well.  The Arboretum features the “Great Hall of Trees,” which makes a great photo background. There is also a pretty outdoor holiday light display located in the gardens.

Minnehaha Park and Falls: Minneapolis, open daily

Minnehaha Park  offers great opportunities to have nature photography sessions, especially after a beautiful white snowfall that blankets the naked trees and plants. Additionally, the frozen Minnehaha Falls, with its glacial appearance and array of icicles, always makes a great Instagram post.

Bentleyville Tour of Lights: Duluth, November 18-December 26, 5-9 pm Sunday-Thursday, 5-10 pm Friday-Saturday

Known as “America’s Largest Free Walk-Through Lighting Display,” Bentleyville’s grand and festive display of holiday lights is an awesome location to experiment with lighting in photography. It’s also a great holiday destination to explore and take pictures with friends and family. Got some pretty Bentleyville shots to be showcased? Ice Castles MN: Stillwater (specific date to be announced), 4-9 pm Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Closed Tuesday,  4-10:30 pm Friday, 11am-10:30 pm Saturday,  12-8 pm Sunday

What is a more Instagramable place in the winter than an Ice Castle? Besides being a fun place to visit with friends and family, the incredible ice castle featured annually in Stillwater is also a breathtaking structure to practice any type of photography.
