– Get to know this 6’7” rebounding machine –
Zach: How long have you been playing basketball?
Andrew: Since I was 5 years old because of a Michael Jordan poster that I saw.
Z: How do you train in the offseason?
A: Just play basketball and this past summer we had a trainer who came in 3 times a week and he trained us in plyometrics, agility drills, and body weight exercises. Going to the gym, taking lots of practice shots, and working on all parts of my game.
Z: What are your expectations for the season?
A: Every team’s goal is to win State so we set benchmarks to accomplish before that. To even make it to State you have to win sections and to get a good seed in section you have to get a good record during the regular season. Another goal is to win your conference.
Z: How will you deal with playing against some of the best teams in the state every game in the new Lake Conference?
A: It’s definitely challenging. It comes down to practice, working hard to prepare for every game. Also, defense is huge. Defense wins championships – I know it’s a cliché but it’s true.
Z: Do you think anyone can stop Hopkins, the winners of the last three state championships?
A: Yeah, I definitely think so. They actually lost a preseason scrimmage so no team is unbeatable. There are other good teams in the state.
Z: Do you have any personal goals for the season?
A: I just want to help the team win, work as hard as I can, and give my best effort. I don’t set personal goals.
Z: What do you feel your role is on the team?
A: Defensive leader. Our team is filled with people who can score a lot. I think my role is to guard the other team’s best player in the post and, of course, rebounding.
