Vikings – Packers: Battle for NFC North Supremacy

David Weinberg, Sports Editor

As the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers prepare to face off this coming Sunday, the dynamics of this match-up are a little different than they normally are. While Packers fans may prefer to pour vinegar in their eyes than admit it, the Vikings currently sit atop the NFC North. That’s why this game on Sunday is so important – the winner of the game will hold the coveted 1st place position in the division.

The Vikings are on fire right now! Fresh off of 5 consecutive wins, the Vikings certainly have the momentum. One key to the Vikings’ success is running back Adrian Peterson, whose return this year has helped the team immensely. Peterson is by far the NFL’s leading rusher thus far. Just as valuable as his running abilities are his leadership skills. Peterson’s veteran status and high expectations improve the performance of everyone around him, especially Vikings 2nd-year quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. However, doubts remain about the 7-2 Vikings, as they’ve only played against one team with a winning record so far. Not only that, but the Packers have won the previous 8 out of 10 games against Minnesota.

While the Vikings are on cloud-9 right now, the Packers are a different story. Following an impressive 6-0 start, Green Bay has dropped three straight games, including an embarrassing loss to the Detroit Lions last week. Despite struggling on both sides of the ball in recent weeks, the Packers still have two invaluable assets: premier head coach Mike McCarthy and quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers is not only incredibly good (even though he’s struggled in recent weeks), but also experienced. As the Packers season appears to be spiraling perilously, a win over their closest rival would be an excellent opportunity to get their ship back on course as they aim to win their fifth consecutive NFC North division title.

This game on Sunday afternoon is to be a thrilling one! My prediction? Minnesota pulls off the win over Green Bay, 27-21.

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.
