Panthers’ Newton brings dance craze to the mainstream
December 9, 2015
The Carolina Panthers are rollin’. With a 12-0 record, the Panthers have already guaranteed themselves a playoff spot and appear to be on a nearly unstoppable trajectory. Not only that, quarterback Cam Newton is in the running to be this year’s league MVP. In other words, Cam Newton is feeling pretty good. So good, in fact, that he’s brought a new dance craze to the forefront of America : the “dab”.
As one of the NFL’s most dynamic and exciting players, Cam Newton’s touchdown celebrations are understandably unique. But popularizing a dance trend? That’s taking it to a whole new level. In recent weeks, Newton has celebrated by “dabbing,” which is essentially appearing as though you’re sneezing into your arm/elbow, but in a way that syncs perfectly with the beat. While an Atlanta rapper created the dance back in September, Newton’s celebrity has been fueling the dance’s popularity in recent weeks. And it hasn’t stopped with Newton. Across all levels of football, players are now celebrating touchdowns and other key plays by “dabbing.” Even coaches and team owners are attempting to do the “dab” in the locker room after big wins.
The “dab” is typically performed with rap or pop songs, which makes it a great high-energy dance. Whether you’re trying to stay fit, party hard, learn how to sneeze properly, or celebrate big plays on the football field, a dab of the “dab” can’t hurt.
