Stuck in a Winter Rut? Get Motivated and Stay Fit in the Winter

Jeff Week, Staff Writer

You get home from school, you’re tired, you’ve got a pile of homework, and the first thing on your mind is a nice, long nap. Going to the gym or exercising is the last thing you would ever want to do.

Staying fit is significantly harder in the winter than any other season. The inability to go outside and all the effort required just to get to the gym result in a sort of “hibernation” for many young adults. It is incredibly clear that those who consistently stay fit live much healthier lives, not to mention spring break is right around the corner. I encourage you to check out all the different ways to exercise in the winter. Here are a few of Breezes’ most recommended workout options:

  1. We’ve got good, ole’ Lifetime Fitness, a notable fan favorite at Minnetonka. LifeTime is great for its array of different workout and post-workout options, such as lap pools, steam rooms, saunas, courts, machines of all kinds, and a Life Café with protein shakes that actually taste good. However, all of this comes with a price, and it’s pretty steep: $189.00 initiation fee and $77.00 monthly fee for a single membership. Overall, LifeTime is pretty great if you don’t mind working out next to remarkably fit people and going to a gym so busy that makes it nearly impossible to find a good parking spot.
  2. Pagel, conveniently located right across from South Entrance, also offers memberships to students looking for a way to workout and lift some weights after school. This would be a great option for students wanting to avoid dismaying commutes across town to the nearest gym and looking to get a solid workout with the basics at a low cost.
  3. The Fitness center, recently added in 2014, provides a sweet escape from monotonous class lectures and is conveniently located behind the black box near the west entrance. This is the perfect option for those with an open period that’d like to take advantage of their extra hour by going for a run on the treadmill or breaking a sweat on the stair stepper.
  4. Lastly, we’ve got sport’s captain practices. If you’re someone who gets along with new people easily, go check out some new sports where you can get a workout at the same time. There are plenty of sports that are having captain’s practice right now, such as lacrosse, tennis, and track & field. Most of them will make announcements on the morning show so make sure to watch out for those to figure out when and where to meet. And if all else fails, try Winter Running club. There’s nothing like getting a workout in with Patrick Brady if you’re trying to stay in shape.

So if you haven’t been too active this winter I encourage you to check out one of these options because before you know it, warm weather will be here and it might require you to ditch the comfy, puffy winter coat and reveal your Summer wardrobe.
