Are you interested in creating art and learning more about it but don’t have time in your schedule to take a class? The answer to your problem may be an art club! If you are interested in experimenting with different mediums, then there are all kinds of art clubs for you to try.
Art Club works with felt, fabric, metal, paint, clay, and almost anything you can imagine. Last year, the club made bird houses and auctioned them off to support a senior home, doing some good for the community. There is also a small cafe in Excelsior, called The Lobby Coffee & Leisure, where students’ art is displayed and can be sold. Clara Curry, ‘26, one of the co-presidents says that she likes being a part of the club because “it’s such a joy being able to use [her] skills as an artist to help others learn and grow in new mediums.” This club is for those who want to express themselves, make friends through a community, and build skills through the guidance of advanced club members. But if there is a specific interest that speaks to you, there is also Video Production Club, Ceramics Club, Photography Club, Comic Artists Club, and National Art Honors Society.
Ceramics Club, which just started this year, is like an extension of the class itself. They make the traditional bowls and vases, but they also work on projects specific to the club. Just recently, they sculpted little clay animals, and they plan to make silverware and bowls and have a soup night or have a picnic. Another art club, Photography Club, has been around for about 4 years. This club started with a few people with a similar interest in photography, and now the club stands with about 30 people who take pictures, learn from each other, talk about methods and style types, and share tips. The leader of the photography club, Francisco Moreno, ‘25, says it’s a great place to “learn, share, and create.” MHS has many art clubs with passionate and vibrant leaders, and by going to any of these clubs you will be in a positive environment with fun, creative, and other talented individuals.
