The “Spring Break Slog” is a phenomenon coined either by millions of doctors or by me, but its core idea remains true no matter who is responsible. “This slog is a period in the year, deep in the trenches of February and March, where it can be hard to stay motivated and not anticipate spring break too much,” said No One, ‘25. With this phenomenon’s prevalence at our high school, it was clear that a deep dive into students’ favorite songs or musical artists that they use to get through the Spring Break Slog was necessary.

“I can’t think of a song, but I can think of an artist. I’d have to say Elliott Smith, so basically any of his songs. I like his music because it’s like comforting and kind of relaxing too.”
Sam: My Dad hates Elliott Smith, but that doesn’t mean you should! You’re not my Dad.

“This is gonna sound kinda weird but ‘The Last Stand’ by Sabaton is the one that gives me the most energy. I don’t know the exact musical terms but the beat and instruments are really upbeat, and the lyrics are also uplifting. The song is actually about the Swiss National Guard protecting the Pope in 1527.”
Sam: Sabaton is a Swedish power metal band, which is a subgenre of heavy metal. Holy smokes! One learns something new every day

“My go-to song to cheer me up is ‘Cruisin’ by Smokey Robinson. There’s just something about the melody and lyrics that always manage to uplift me, even in the coldest of Minnesota winters.”
Sam: Evie hit the nail on the head! I love Smokey Robinson, and his hit songs like “I Second That Emotion” and “The Tears of a Clown” are catchy and fun “oldies” that I enjoy, especially during this time of year.

“An uplifting artist that I like to listen to when I’m feeling down is Connor Price. I enjoy his music because it is upbeat, easy to relate and groove to, and puts me in a better mood than [] I was feeling previously.”
Sam: You’ve never heard of Connor Price? He’s a Canadian artist who got his career started at age 6. Nowadays, he makes hip-hop and rap music and has even collaborated musically with Idris Elba! That’s pretty wacky.
No matter who you listen to, make sure to find your favorite tunes during these winter months!
