Coffeehouse performances are known by most to be one of the highlights of the school year; however, long before a single chord is played or a note is sung, there is a dedicated crew working backstage to bring the events to life and excited artists working to create the perfect atmosphere. As the lights begin to dim and the first song begins, the audience only hears the captivating music on stage. But behind the scenes, it’s a team of volunteers and musicians that makes Coffeehouse performances successful. From setting up the stage to adjusting sound levels to managing the set lists and tuning the instruments, every detail is carefully managed to ensure it’s a night to remember.
For the musicians, weeks, if not months, of preparation go into their sets. Wyatt Lane, ‘26, a drummer and guitarist for the Telecatters said, “I wanted to play at Coffeehouse after learning an instrument despite the daily practice that it took. It really made me excited to use an instrument in a way that could make some kind of an emotion or feeling, and overall I’ve had a lot of fun not just performing, but with the friends I’ve made and the community as a whole.” All of the practice and preparation leads up to the performances in which the talents shine together in front of an electric audience.
