Best of 2014

Eric Van Camp, A&E Editor

With the New Year now upon us we can now safely look back at the past year with rose-colored glasses and feel nostalgic for all things 2014. With 2014 obviously being one of the best years in history for all things media, just what was the best of 2014? Was it the golden age of movies? Or, perhaps, new music triumphed this past year? Were new video game releases the highlight of the year? Instead of choosing just one “Best of List” we at Breezes (aka me) have chosen to compile all these possible lists into one online article for your reading pleasure.

Top 5 Movie Releases

5. Guardians of the Galaxy

4. American Sniper

 3. Boyhood

2. Interstellar

1. The Hobbit

Although a tough list to make as 2014 will surely go down as a Golden Age of Cinema, The Hobbit wins the top of my list. Although some will surely complain about unnecessary sub plots between certain elves and certain dwarves that weren’t even in the book, the movie did not disappoint. Sporting an impressive 7.8/10 on IMDB, The Hobbit deserves the title of #1 movie of 2014. (Note: The Interview almost made it to list but after some internal conflict over what counts as a movie release and what doesn’t, I have decided to grant The Interview an honorary spot at 1.5)

Top 5 Albums of 2014

5. Ultraviolence – Lana Del Rey

4. Hozier – Hozier

3. X – Ed Sheeran

2. Lazaretto – Jack White

1. Morning Phase – Beck

An even harder list to make than the top 5 movies, these 5 albums represent the diversity and true passion of all things musical in the great year 2014. The winning album is by an old musician, Beck. Morning Phase is a break from the traditional garage rock sound of the 2000s star as Beck shows us all his slower side. Morning Phase is great for chilling out on an introspective car ride, for unwinding after a stressful day of school, or for simply great study music.

Top 5 New Video Games of 2014

5. Destiny

4. Watch Dogs

3. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

2. Super Smash Bros Wii U

1. Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire

Quite honestly this was probably the easiest list to make. While, like movies and music, video games reached their peak in 2014, Pokémon is notoriously hard to top. Pokémon: Ruby and Sapphire were the games most of us grew up with, being the first installment of Pokémon for the Gameboy Advance. I myself have beaten the elite 4 several times and logged who knows how many hours into my now lost-to-the-couch-cushions copy of Pokémon Sapphire, and even more onto my brother’s stolen copy of Ruby. Nintendo once again pulls through on another great idea. 10/10, would play again.
