The problem with Emojis
April 16, 2015
Apple has released their latest update for their iOS system, which included an overhaul to Emojis. Apple’s emoticon keyboard had recently come under scrutiny for a lack of racial and gender equality, as well as the obvious lack of any Emojis of color. Apple chose to add color options as well as new Emojis to their keyboard but no change, no matter how well intentioned, is not without its opponents. So here are my gripes against Apple’s new Emojis.
- Each hand has the option after you click on it to choose the color you would like. This is a great way to include different skin tones while saving space, however the hearts are all still in their separate colors. Why not make it so when you click on the heart the different options for colors pop up? Serious waste of space, Apple.
- I, for one, am a fan of the yellow color being default. Although, yes, it looks like all the Emojis have come down with a sever case of Jaundice, it’s a good neutral skin tone. But I feel like my personal privacy has been invaded by the fact that all of my contact and Emojis in other parts of my phone have retroactively been changed to yellow. Just what DOES Apple have access to?
- There are still no Emojis for: ice skating, drumming, fingers crossed, rock on, and plenty more activities. Please fix this.
- Gender equality was an important factor in Apple’s decision to change the Emoji keyboard, but fifteen different family options, each with six different skin colors, seems a bit overkill. Why not just have the woman Emoji, man Emoji, boy Emoji and girl Emoji and let people build their own family? Not to mention there are no single parent family options.
- The new layout is going to take some getting used to and at the end of the rows of face Emojis, the developers decided to stack the eyes, nose, and lips Emojis right on top of each other. Now I have to scroll past this weird face every time I want an Emoji. Thanks, Apple.
- One of the Emojis is two girls dancing in small bunny outfits. Now I’m not one to jump to conclusions but its impossible not to draw parallels between this Emoji and a certain magazine of widespread distribution that I’ve heard “has great articles.”
Although I have these problems with the Emojis, I really do think it’s a step in the right direction. Plus, Apple added more flags including, most importantly, the Canadian flag.
