Have you ever heard of the Galley? If you haven’t, let me introduce you to the Minnetonka High School Food Shelf. Partnering with the ICA Food Shelf, the Interact Club has been able to help people of our community tackle food insecurity. With donations and volunteers, they manage to deliver food to those in need in our beloved community.
The Galley is open one day a week on Thursday, all throughout the school day. students can stop by to help pick up the groceries that they need, while still coming and leaving school like normal. Students can use their backpack, bags, or anything that they need to bring it home. This way, the Interact Club manages to keep the Food Shelf super easy, discrete, and available for people in our community. If you want to know more, contact the Interact Club or their advisor, Rebecca Marks.
The ICA Food Shelf has found that transportation is one of the most prevalent issues in stopping people from getting the help they need in terms of food security. However, with the Galley, students who are already coming to school can just drop by and pick up food for their families, which makes it available to even more of our community members.
The ICA Food Shelf is a well known food distribution center to those in need. Since their founding in 1971, they have been helping out with emergency food bags and groceries to seniors, low-income families and apartment buildings, and now, in schools. In fact, the Galley is not the only partnership the ICA has with Minnetonka HIgh School. During the Tour de Tonka, a portion of each rider’s registration fee is donated to the ICA. Riders can also donate money or food items as well. This has been a partnership since 2006, raising a combined total of $103,000 for food security, groceries, and even the Minnetonka Community Education Youth and Early Childhood Programs.
Please consider donating to the Galley! From food and non-perishable items like canned goods to financial help, anything would be greatly appreciated. If you are in need of assistance, please contact the Interact club, the main office, or Rebecca Marks for more information.
