Recently some new murals have been going up in the school. While incomplete now, they are expected to be completed by the end of the school year. The most obvious one is the staircase in the English area (not the one which already has an anchor mural) where right now there is only some preliminary sketching of a scene on Lake Minnetonka. One can see the outlines of the old Excelsior rollercoaster and a steam ship. This one is the task of a group of students in IB Visual Art. According to IB Art Junior Madison Johnson, “We wanted to show some local pride and history.” The other mural is less obvious, located in Ms. Norton’s biology room. After the last wave of construction she lost two of her three windows and is seeking to regain the feel of looking out into nature. Rather than use a sledge hammer to create her own windows, she decided to enlist National Art Honor Society for a less drafty option. Desire for the illusion of windows is what led Ms. Mosiman to request the design of the murals in her English room, which only has one narrow window looking over the commons. From personal experience, I can say the murals alleviate the prison feeling of some interior rooms. National Art Honor Society is also working on retouching Ms. Mosiman’s; however, according to Junior Victoria Niu, “We aren’t changing anything in the design because we want to respect the previous students as artists.”
